Dinsdag 31 januari - deel 2
Middenin Langa achter een hoog hek: een mooie binnenplaats en een strak gebouw. Binnen een lange galerij met kunst aan de muur en een piano in de hoek. Diverse modern ingerichte ruimtes met alle benodigde apparatuur. Met onder meer een professionele muziekstudio.
Welkom bij Bridges for music, waar ‘kansarme’ en talentvolle jongeren de kans krijgen om zich professioneel te bekwamen in muziekproductie, met name dance en beat. Elk half jaar start een groep met twintig jongeren. Aan de muur een bord met alle sponsors. Ik herken Awakenings en ADE.
We draaien een ochtend mee met deze groep. Het begint steevast met een kringgesprek, waarin ieder vertelt hoe het met hem gaat en waar hij vandaag zin in heeft. Alle deelnemers zijn ‘cocreators’ en hebben een groepstaak naast hun persoonlijke traject. Zo leidt een van de jongeren vandaag het gesprek. Tijdens het gesprek merk je de oprechte aandacht voor elkaar. Problemen over voldoende eten, transport, zorg voor een kind worden gedeeld. Bijzonder vandaag is dat we samen met deze groep een workshop Theory U doen als onderdeel van hun opleiding en als onderdeel van ons eigen Van Vieren leertraject deze week. ‘Onze’ Marian Goodman begeleidt het. Ik ben behoorlijk getraind in de U, praktiseer het zelf ook, maar ik kan me niet heugen dat ik ooit zo’n scherpe, heldere en recht in het hart sessie heb meegemaakt.
Theory U gaat over diepgaand collectief en persoonlijk veranderen, je eigen leven, je organisatie of community en de samenleving: Hoe moeilijk het is, hoe het kan en hoe mooi dat kan zijn. Met praktische oefeningen leren we de grondbeginselen van de U. Een wezenlijk element daarin is oprecht luisteren naar een ander, liefst zodanig dat er ruimte ontstaat voor nieuwe gedachten en mogelijkheden. In tweetallen gaan we uit elkaar met de opdracht; ‘vertel iets over je achtergrond en vertel over twee gebeurtenissen of keuzes die hebben gemaakt wie je nu bent.’ Ieder vertelt maximaal een kwartier zonder dat de ander onderbreekt, die luistert alleen.
De jongeman met wie ik de binnenplaats oploop, stelt zich voor. Mangaliso is zijn naam. Aarzelend begint hij te vertellen. Opgegroeid in de sloppen van Stellenbosch, met een dronken vader en misbruik. Steeds de vraag, behoor ik tot de goeden of de slechten; ga ik het criminele pad of een ander pad. Alle paden heeft hij gelopen. Steeds was de muziek bij hem, steeds was de muziek in hem. Muziek maken gaf hem richting. En nu kiest hij voor het goede pad. Dat heeft God hem gewezen, die geeft hem kracht, zo vertelt hij. Moeilijk blijft het, met zijn familie, met zijn vrienden die allemaal in die andere wereld leven. Maar hij is nu hier, hij is nu lid van deze Bridges gemeenschap; met hun steun kan ik mijn weg vinden, zo zegt hij. Nu hij eenmaal praat, is hij bijna niet meer te stoppen. Alles wil hij me wel vertellen.
Het is mijn beurt. Ik vertel over mijn welvarende jeugd op de Veluwe als ondernemerskind, over ontwrichtende familieverhoudingen en mijn gevechten daarmee. Ik ben me bewust van het grote contrast met het verhaal van Mangaliso, en ik vertel het toch. Als ik ben uitgepraat, zwijgt hij een tijdje. Dan kijkt hij me recht aan en vraagt; Heb je je moeder kunnen vergeven?
We kennen elkaar een half uur …. Bruggen zijn geslagen.
Wie weet ontmoet ik hem over een paar jaar in Amsterdam als hij optreedt op het ADE.
Fundi deed dat al met succes afgelopen jaar. Afrobeat is coming…

Day 2 - part 2: Music for bridges

In the middle of Langa behind a high fence: a beautiful courtyard and a sleek building. Inside a long gallery with art on the wall and a piano in the corner. Several modernly furnished rooms with all the necessary equipment. Including a professional music studio.
Welcome to Bridges for music, where underprivileged and talented young people have the opportunity to become professionally skilled in music production, especially Dance and beat. Every six months a group of twenty young people start. On the wall is a board with all the sponsors. I recognize Awakenings and ADE.
We spend a morning with this group. It always starts with a circle dialogue in which everyone tells how they are doing and what they feel like doing today. All participants are "cocreators" and have a community task in addition to their individual program. For example, one of the young people is leading the conversation today. During the conversation i notice the genuine attention to each other. Issues are shared about having enough food, transportation, care for a child. Special today is that we are doing a Theory U workshop with this group as part of their training and as part of our own Van Vieren learning program in this week. "Our" Marian Goodman is facilitating it. I'm quite trained in the U, practice it myself, but I can't remember ever experiencing such a sharp, clear and straight to the heart session.
Theory U is about deep collective and personal change, in your own life, in your organization or in civil community and society: How hard it is to make deep changes, how it can be and how beautiful it can be. With practical exercises we will learn the basics of the U. An essential element in this is sincere listening to another, preferably in such a way as to create space for new thoughts and possibilities. Generative listening it is called. In pairs we go outside with the assignment; 'tell something about your background and tell about two events or choices that have made who you are today.' Each tells a maximum of fifteen minutes without interrupting, the other just listens.
The young man with whom I walk into the courtyard introduces himself. Mangaliso is his name. Hesitantly he begins to talk. Growing up in the slums of Stellenbosch, with a drunken father and abuse. Always the question there, do I belong to the good or the bad; do I go the criminal path or another path. All paths he walked. Always the music was with him, always the music was in him. Making music gave him direction. And now he chooses the right path. That is what God has shown him, who gives him strength, he says. It remains difficult, with his family, with his friends who all live in this other world. But he is here now, he is now a member of this Bridges community; with their support I can find my way, he says. Once he talks, he is almost unstoppable. Everything he wants to tell me.
It's my turn. I tell about my prosperous childhood in the Veluwe countryside as a child in an entrepreneur family, I tell about disruptive family relationships and my battles with them. Aware of the heavy contrast with Mangaliso's story, I tell it anyway. When I am finished talking, he is silent for a while. Then he looks me straight in the eyes and asks; Have you been able to forgive your mother?
We know each other half an hour .... Bridges have been built.
Who knows, I might meet him in Amsterdam in a few years when he performs at the ADE.
Fundi already did that successfully last year. Afrobeat is coming...
